Various dates from April to October 2013
Excursion 1- Glenarm Castle & Giant’s Causeway
One of Northern Ireland’s most beautiful estates, Glenarm Castle remains the private residence of the Earls of Antrim. From May to September we have the opportunity to explore the historic Walled Garden, among Ireland’s oldest and dating from the 18th century. Originally created to supply the castle with fruit and vegetables, it is now filled with beautiful flowers and herbaceous plants. During April and October, when the gardens are closed, we will visit the castle by private arrangement or the newly restored Antrim Castle Gardens instead.
We head to the Giant’s Causeway, so named for the enormous basalt columns produced by volcanic eruptions some 60 million years ago, and now a designated World Heritage Site. A state-of-the-art visitor centre opened in 2012 where interactive displays, exhibitions and audio guides unveil the stories and science that surround this natural phenomenon.
Excursion 2 - Castle Ward & Mount Stewart House, Garden and Temple of the Winds
With superb views over Strangford Lough, Castle Ward is an eccentric 18th century house that features a curious mixture of architectural styles. Set in 820 picturesque acres of demesne, the estate also has a stable-yard that houses an impressive laundry, a tea room and a second-hand bookshop.
We visit the magnificent mount Stewart House, Garden and Temple of the Winds in County Down. Perhaps the highlight here is the property’s wonderfully atmospheric garden, which has a distinct Mediterranean feel thanks to the exceptionally mild climate of nearby Strangford Lough.
Excursion 3 - Belfast & Titanic Experience
We enjoy a guided tour of Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital city. Now a thriving, modern metropolis, Belfast has a colourful history and, as a key player in the Industrial Revolution, was the centre for the Irish linen and tobacco industries.
Belfast is still home to Harland & Wolff, the shipbuilders that built the Titanic, so it’s fitting that we’ll visit the fantastic Titanic Experience that opened in 2012 to mark the centenary of the liner’s doomed maiden voyage.
Excursion 4 - Dublin
We cross the border to enjoy half a day in Dublin, the Republic’s wonderful capital. With its fascinating past, stately Georgian architecture and plethora of convivial pubs serving up the perfect pint of Guinness, Dublin never fails to charm first-time and frequent visitors alike. There are also landscaped parks and gardens scattered throughout the city and shopping opportunities aplenty.
