This garden represents the beginnings of the homeless charity Emmaus in 1954, when Abbe Pierre appealed to the public for donations. The overwhelming response, described by him as “an uprising of kindness”, enabled him to set up the first Emmaus Community in his own garden in France.
There are many references to the Emmaus story within the garden, and some of the features have been made by local artists and Emmaus companions.
This practical garden, which includes some edible plants and many reclaimed materials, is being relocated to the Emmaus Community in Cambridge after the show. This is in keeping with the policy of Emmaus to recycle where possible.
