Conceptual gardens sponsored by Tropicana

Up to the end of 2009, a total of 179 British soldiers had been killed in Iraq and 246 in Afghanistan. With so many troops dying in the war, this garden is a moving and movable memorial to them.

It comprises four L-shaped walls that form a crucifix shape, made from a series of gabion cages containing loosely arranged construction blocks and blood red debris-filled bags. The narrow entrances to the pathways make progress measured, allowing time for reflection. Two olive trees symbolise peace and a central sculpture forms a focal point, completing the design.

Expert commentary by Chris Young, The Garden

Visitors are forced to look down the path to focus onto the sculpture at the end. You are not invited to look, you are FORCED to look. The design really directs the viewer into looking through the rows of gabions onto the sculpture positioned in the centre.
