Girlguiding UK members have worked with designer Philippa Pearson to create this garden that celebrates 100 years of Girlguiding UK. The plants and design highlight the elements that members say make Girlguiding UK a unique and thriving organisation: allowing girls the opportunity to voice their views, space for “girl” time, continual evolvement and relevance to girls today, open to all and active support of diversity.

Involving many members in the design and growing of plants, this garden references the heritage of the organisation from its start at the Crystal Palace rally in 1909. Traditional guiding activities are hinted at, including camps and international adventures, whilst the emphasis is on the views and opinions of today's girls and young women.

Expert commentary by Phil Clayton and Chris Young, The Garden

The most outstanding part of the garden is the vegetable beds. The okra is unusual - you don’t see it very often outside in the UK. Also of interest are the purple podded peas, some interesting chillies and a beautiful medlar tree. Ornamentals such as Agapanthus are particularly well used here, and there is a nice bank of sunflowers at the back.

In this garden what works best is the balance of ornamentals used informally in the sitting area and the vegetable beds. There is a lot of planting variety in quite a small space.
