This play was originally commissioned to be staged on the Festival of Twelfth Night, a time of merriment and revels when all manner of mummery was performed. The main character in the play, Sir Toby Belch, would have been especially active on that night, bringing chaos and disorder to the festivities.

This garden has been created for Sir Toby, with an assortment of tricks and pranks incorporated within the design. Order and correctness are turned upside down, and nothing is as it seems. Other characters within the play are represented subtly within the garden.

Expert commentary by Chris Young, The Garden

A very attractive mix of ornamentals and edibles - including a back screen of Lablab, tomato, French beans and runner beans, lettuces and herbs mixed among other plants. The shape of the garden is an unfurling crozier.
