This year Bulgaria has its own garden at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show for the first time. A small but geographically important country, it is sharing its beauty with show visitors and presenting and gifting its favourite flowers to Britain.
+359 is the international dialling code and the world’s communication pathway with Bulgaria. To emphasize this theme the central space of the garden is occupied by 359 planted pots. At the end of the show each will be presented to a visitor and go to a new British home.
The popular flowers and the rare tea plants (Sideritis scardica) in the pots that are being offered to visitors are evocative of charming early 20th century Bulgarian gardens. These gardens are described by the poet P R Slaveykov in his verse: “In my tiny garden, what there is, means so much”.
