Enduring Freedom? combines a harsh Afghan landscape with one from the well-ordered Western world. It aims to inspire the visitor to reflect on the diversity of cultural values, ethics, morality and the ultimate price that is paid to defend these.

The garden illustrates the rising number of casualties caused by Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) over the period of the war and the challenge faced by the thousands of young soldiers who venture out each day into a hostile environment. A swathe of grasses, highlighted with red poppies and complemented by sculptural hard landscaping, presents a contemporary homogeneous design.

Expert commentary by Chris Young - Editor of The Garden

This is a thought-provoking installation. At the front there is a contemporary Western feel in the form of a courtyard which you walk through to a contrasting representation of Afghanistan. A very powerful message which is emphasised in its simplicity.
