The garden aims to heighten the awareness of the therapeutic benefits of gardens and represents a segment of the LOROS hospice courtyard. A beautiful garden can help a patient come to terms with an incurable illness and provide a restful retreat for carers.

The gazebo represents the patient’s domain and opens into a private space where he or she can quietly reflect and enjoy the sights, sounds, scent and feel of the garden.

The centrepiece of the courtyard is a glass mosaic sculpture that reflects the colour and movement of its surroundings. It is overlooked by a curved shaded bench that provides opportunities for interaction with others.

Expert commentary by Phil Clayton - Features Editor of The Garden

I am very keen on the area towards the front which contains edible plants mixed with annuals. Beautiful cerise Cosmos is planted with double flowered Calendula and purple orach, which is eaten like spinach. These are easy plants to combine and visually very effective.
