£12,000 donation for LOROS garden appeal

29 June 2011

The team behind the LOROS Garden of Light and Reflection, which will be staged at the Hampton Court Palace Garden Show, was absolutely delighted by an unexpected boost to its fundraising efforts.

Kilworth House Hotel and Theatre has made a £12,000 donation to the LOROS Garden Appeal which will be used to fund Rebecca Newnham's beautiful glass sculpture which is the centre piece of the garden.

The sculpture was originally commissioned as part of the landscape proposals by Dejardin Design for a courtyard forming part of a new extension at LOROS but, owing to a shortfall of funding, was cut from the project. It was the idea of Pauline Pitts, project manager of the show garden, to raise the necessary funding to install the sculpture.

This initial thought evolved into the idea of staging a show garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, the world’s largest flower show, in order not only to raise money but also to raise awareness of the hospice movement, and the importance within that of the provision of a beautiful outside space for the use of patients, staff and visitors alike.

The LOROS Garden Appeal was launched in February 2011 to raise £80,000. Funds raised to date top £60,000 so sponsors private and corporate are still being sought.

Pauline’s company, Lyndon Landscapes, designed the beautiful gardens at Kilworth House Hotel in Leicestershire more than 10 years ago and approached owner Celia Mackay as a potential sponsor. Celia very generously agreed that Kilworth House Hotel and Theatre would fund the sculpture in its entirety.

The LOROS Garden of Light and Reflection will be installed by Kilgour Landscapes at Hampton Court and then at the LOROS Hospice in Leicester after the show.

Owner of Kilworth House Hotel, Celia Mackay said: 'LOROS plays an amazing role in the lives of many people in Leicestershire and Rutland and we are delighted to be able to sponsor something very beautiful for the Garden of Light and Reflection which we hope will bring pleasure to patients and their families for many years to come.'

Pauline Pitts from the Garden Appeal team said: 'If you visit the LOROS Garden website, we have included photographs of the sculpture in progress.'
