In this 21st century croft garden, the ancient Scottish way of life has been injected with some contemporary style. Reflecting concerns about sustainability and renewable energy, the garden demonstrates how to make the most of natural resources without impacting heavily upon them.

The design incorporates modern lines and technology within the natural landscape, bringing ancient traditions comfortably into the 21st century whilst retaining their unique appeal. Native planting, a water rill and insect homes provide ideal conditions for birds and insects, including the bees from the croft’s hive.

Expert commentary by Chris Young & Phil Clayton, The Garden magazine

Set in the Highlands, this garden deals with the exposure and the high winds by creating quiet areas using a screen with flaps, connected to the turbine on the roof. When it gets too windy, the turbine turns fast, and slowly closes off the flaps, protecting the crop beneath. Being all about sustainability, many of the plants are food crops or useful.
