This stylish garden is inspired by the bold, artistic movement of the fashion industry. The avant-garde and pioneering work of the textile designer Sonia Delauney (1885-1979) is a strong influence on the garden’s layout.

The design combines a defined geometric pattern with natural elements, creating an exciting composition. The random nature of fabric fibres when viewed under an electron microscope is the inspiration behind the stumpery, through which water flows. Textile patterns influenced the sinuous layout of the plants, which have been arranged into well-defined groups.

Whilst fashion is in a continual state of change, the principles of good design remain constant.

Expert commentary by Chris Young & Phil Clayton, The Garden magazine

This is a low key garden of green and some purple, featuring native or native-looking plants. Multi-stemmed birch, ferns, and dark-stemmed Cornus kesslringii create an interwoven green tapestry with a few splashes of colour. There is outstanding use of texture, with the silver birch logs coming out of the water feature, using the same silver birch logs coming out of the back wall. This gives a great sense of movement and texture.
