Stars of the woody plant selection
The vast array of woody plants in the Great Pavilion shows just how diverse this plant group can be. The exhibit that particulary caught the eye of Woody Plant Committee member Raymond Evison was the Hillier stand which he praised for its wonderful collection of trees.
'The one that stood out for me was the Cornus controversa variegata,' said Raymond. 'There are three or four specimen plants which are marvellous quality.'
There was praise too for the quality of the plants on the Peter Beales Roses exhibit, as well as David Austin Roses, where Rosa James Galway, with its pink full blooms, particularly caught Raymond's eye.
Burncoose Nurseries offers an interesting selection of woody plants, but if you are looking for acers Raymond suggests that the Hippopottering exhibit is not to be missed.
As for the star of the show among woody plants, Raymond again points to the Cornus on the Hillier exhibit. 'If you are looking for a variegated plant I'd recommend that. It's great value and suitable for medium to large gardens,' he said.
