The theme of this garden is “surviving”, celebrating how the work of Cancer Research UK helps save thousands of lives with its research.

The garden is designed for a couple who have a love of the coastal landscape; it is an abstracted representation of this landscape using water, plants, timber and rock. The theme of “surviving” is explored conceptually as a journey, a steady climb with various routes through the space from a barren seashore up to a lush refuge. Combining the seashore and “surviving” metaphors, the garden features plants that are adapted to survive in coastal conditions.

Expert commentary by Phil Clayton - Features Editor of The Garden

I really like the planting in here; it is unusual in that it has very low growing plants. Most of the plants come from maritime areas including sea thrift Armeria maritima, sea kale Crambe maritima, viper’s bugloss Echium and other plants usually found in arid, gravelly, exposed conditions.
