This sunken garden juxtaposes traditional and modern materials to illustrate how both old and new can keep a space vital in perpetuity.
Reclaimed Cotswold stone and yew hedging suggest durability and a sense of permanence. Sculpted columns and water pipes add drama, mystery and a contemporary note, albeit with classical overtones. Planting contrasts the formality of yew with looser forms of perennials, some of which will colonise and self-seed, occasionally exploiting crevices of cobbles and dry stone walling.
The nomadic nature of some of these plants suggests that, left to its own devices, this garden will shift and change.
