The HESCO Garden has been designed to draw attention to the importance of water power in the industrial evolution of Leeds. There are two working examples in Leeds today, the Armley Industrial Museum and Thwaite Mill.

The garden has a semi-natural setting and incorporates cultivated ornamental trees, shrubs and perennials. Native species are used to the front and left of the garden.

The main feature has been inspired by a mill. A six metre façade is set amidst a rockwork escarpment, complete with a stream that feeds a working water wheel. The planting scheme has a sympathetic and attractive balance of colour and texture.

Expert commentary by Phil Clayton - Features Editor of The Garden

The water wheel dominates in this garden. The planting in front is pretty, relaxed and informal. It really is quite charming; especially with the use of white ragged robin Lychnis flos-cuculi which is not a plant often seen. Used here this plant ties together all the other plants that include candelabra primulas, various geraniums and irises.
