This year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show sees the first ever caravan-focused show garden.
‘A Celebration of Caravanning’ designed by 2010 Gold medal winner Jo Thompson for The Caravan Club, incorporates the popular hobby of caravanning with the patriotic celebrations taking place this year, such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and Britain hosting the Olympic Games. The garden was also created to celebrate The Caravan Club’s ‘Year of Touring’ along with their 105th birthday.
"It’s in our nature to want to travel and take our creature comforts with us, whether we are away for a day’s trip to a favourite garden or spending a week or two exploring our great British countryside. This 10m x 10m (33ft x 33ft) garden is packed full of a new take on the best of British," says Jo Thompson.
The design stems around Doris, a British 1950s two-person caravan, surounded by pink and cream planting, including irises, roses and peonies. Patriotic touches include a flag patchwork hammock and picnic bench seat cushions.
Lawrence Bate, Director of Marketing for The Caravan Club, says: 'The Club is delighted to be working with Jo Thompson. Her design is the perfect balance between a reflection of a bygone era and contemporary British planting. Her garden honors traditional planting, such as the sort of flowers you would find in the hedgerow while out walking, yet demonstrates the latest in garden design that is achievable in the home.'
Bate continues:"The ‘Celebration of Caravanning’ garden will hopefully highlight why caravanning in the UK is not only a wonderful holiday option but also a fantastic way to pursue your interest and hobbies. For gardeners, what better way to visit the many beautiful gardens the length and breadth of the country, than in a caravan."
