Glamourlands: a Techno-Folly
Glamourlands: a Techno-Folly is a mobile, cartoonesque landscape that, like a digital game, progresses over time. It appeared first at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park last year, then in London’s prestigious Berkeley Square, and will reappear at the Old Vic Tunnels after Chelsea. Each reincarnation sees the original landscape becoming more abstract.

Abandoning the conventions of landscape realism, the pixelated and jewel-encrusted surface is combined with real and preserved plants to create a new and continually evolving hybrid landscape. The pulsating animated screen was realised through working with the animation company Unanico Group. Its meditative rhythm beats at 4.5 cycles/second, a frequency associated with dreamlike states, hinting at the chamber’s potential use as a space for contemplation and, like computer games and gardens, a space to escape the everyday.
Ultimately, this techno-folly references the 18th century’s concern with how man experiences nature, beauty and the sublime, within the contemporary aesthetic of the digital age.
