Information about the life & achievements of Sir Harry Veitch

Sir Harry Veitch – a life of plants and service In 1840, Harry Veitch was born into the Veitch dynasty of nurserymen. In the same year, the Veitches sent William Lobb to the Americas as their first commercial plant hunter. Harry’s life’s work included botany, education, plant breeding, charitable work and Royal Horticultural Society duties. He also helped to organise the International Horticultural Exhibitions of 1866 and 1912, the latter becoming the precursor to the first Chelsea Flower Show in 1913. The plants used in the exhibit highlight Harry’s outstanding horticultural contribution, for which he was knighted in 1912.
