The 9 Billion Conversation Garden
The 9 Billion Conversation Garden asks Chelsea visitors to contemplate life and our future. The concept behind the design raises the issue of an increasingly fragile world of nine billion people by 2050 and the need for a ‘boardroom to the living room’ lifelong conversation between businesses and communities regarding sustainability.
This concept is explored and represented through the design elements: a green (grass) amphitheatre represents the gathering of society, three multi-stem trees symbolise business, community and media, and two pools invite social interaction and reflection.
The garden takes inspiration from the land art movement and the harmony seen in nature. It shows how land art can be used in small garden spaces and demonstrates that innovative garden structure can be achieved without relying heavily on hard landscaping materials.
