2010 marked the centenary of Captain Scott’s polar expedition to the Antarctic, which began when he left Cardiff on the SS Terra Nova. Edwardian Cardiff was a thriving world class city with an economy driven by coal and shipping. Opulent homes, often with formal gardens and topiary, reflected this wealth and prosperity. Inspiration has been taken from these Edwardian gardens for this commemorative garden, which features a central contemporary sculpture saluting Scott’s exploits.
The garden has been rebuilt at Cardiff Bay, close to where Scott set sail, as part of Cardiff’s Scott centenary celebrations, to epitomise the spirit of endeavour and ambition prevalent in Cardiff today.
