A passion for perpetuals...

Glorious scented lilies, roses and easy-to-grow lavenders are among the picks of the show, says show judge Victoria Wakefield, a member of the RHS Herbaceous Plant Committee.
But there's one runaway winner when it comes to scent. "I'm absolutely passionate about perpetual carnations, especially Malmaison carnations," says Victoria, who has been part of the RHS floral committees and trial advisory panels for more than 30 years. "They have a lovely delicate scent, they're very beautiful plants and historically very interesting."
Malmaison carnations, with their distinctive fragrance of cloves, were popular from the 1860s, but were nearly lost to cultivation by the end of the 20th Century. National Plant
Collection holder Jim Marshall rediscovered some Malmaison carnations in the Scottish gardens of Sir George Taylor. These included ‘Souvenir de la Malmaison’, ‘Princess of Wales’, ‘Duchess of Westminster’ and ‘Thora’. Bulked up by micropropagation and virus-reduced, Marshall’s Malmaisons now produce rooted cuttings for the retail trade, resulting in a number of prominent gardens growing them again.
Lilies for every soil type
If it's lilies you love, then look no further than the H W Hyde stand. It not only looks stunning, but also has an incredibly practical side to the display, which is split between the soil types the bulbs grow best in - acid or alkaline. "People can see what varieties they like, how tall they are or how small, and also what they can grown on their own soil - it's inspiring," said Victoria.
Lavenders are another of the scented stars. "Downderry Nursery has the most exquisite lavenders," enthused Victoria. "It's exceptional how all the nurseries have produced such quality show displays when it's been an horiific year for growing."
More 'must-see' displays:
Waterside Nursery: High quality aquatic display, beautifully presented and very different.
The Copella Bee Garden: You'll learn a lot from this about bees and other important aspects of gardening.
The 5-a-Day Garden: Easy ways to grow 5-a-day for a family.
The Combat Stress Theraputic Garden: "It's a very good garden for sitting in," says Victoria.
