Russian arts garden at Hampton Court

Works of art from the world’s largest collection of Russian art will be recreated at the world’s largest annual flower show. The garden is sponsored by the awe-inspiring Russian Museum in St Petersburg, where the collection is housed.

Visitors enter the garden through a giant picture frame and under a chandelier before walking into a miniature representation of the imperial city of St Petersburg. The garden is bordered by a moat, and features bridges and tree-planted islands, and topiary cupolas that mimic the city’s skyline.

As well as ‘paintings’ the garden also features Russian doll sculptures and is edged with rustic grasses to symbolise the weekend exodus by city inhabitants to their rural retreats or dachas.

Landscape and countryside management company The Twig Group will build the garden with designer Heather Appleton, who was also responsible for their medal-winning gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show last year.

Heather said; 'I visited the Russian Museum in St Petersburg last year and was inspired by its displays of amazing art from the 10th to the 21st centuries.'
