Acanthus mollis ‘Whitewater’ is a dramatic evergreen perennial and a real ‘love it or hate it’ plant, shown by Big Plant Nursery in West Sussex. It has large glossy leaves irregularly splashed with white and white spires of pink flowers in summer. It is a selection from the US and is said to reach around 1m (39in) high and as much across.

x Achimenantha 'Himalayan Sunrise' is a new houseplant shown by Dibleys Nurseries of North Wales. It is vigorous with upright growth and produces masses of pale yellow flowers during summer.

Brachycome Surdaisy Strawberry Pink ‘Bonbrapi’ was shown by Primrose Bank of York. It has attractive, divided dark foliage which makes a good foil for the profusion of bright magenta daisy flowers that appear throughout summer if regularly deadheaded. It proves hardy in mild winters and will reach around 25cm (9in) tall.

Chrysanthemum ‘Star Mist’, from Chrysanthemums Direct of Cheshire is described as an ‘anemone quill’ type and is a new late flowering selection, blooming in November. It may be grown in a container outdoors for summer, but is best bought under glass for flowering.

Dierama ‘Wildside Cross’ is a new charming, pink-flowered selection made by renowned plantsman Keith Wiley and shown by Trecanna Nursery of Cornwall. It needs a sunny, well-drained position with plenty of moisture in summer to thrive.

Lavandula x intermedia ‘Olympia’ is a new introduction from Downderry Nursery of Kent, and is the result of a complex breeding programme. It is a usefully late-flowering lavender, blooming from July to August with sweetly-scented flowers of rich blue produced on a low, compact plant.

Fuchsia ‘Roualeyns White Gold’ is a recent selection from Roualeyn Nursery of Conwy. It is an excellent plant for summer baskets, and forms a lax, spreading plant with yellow tinted new growth and large double white flowers.

Sciadopitys verticillata ‘Compacta’ shown by Larchfield Trees of Coventry is a delightful selection of the unusual Japanese umbrella pine. Its bright green evergreen leaves radiate from the stems rather like the spoke of an umbrella. This is a particularly compact, rather bushy slow growing clone eventually reaching around 2m.

Streptocarpus ‘Harlequin Purple’ is a dramatic new selection of this popular and easily grown flowering houseplant with large two-tone flowers of purple and cream borne in profusion. Bred and shown by Dibleys of North Wales.

Zantedeschia ‘Red Alert’ was one of many selections displayed by Brighter Blooms of Preston. This attractive calla lily was bred in Holland and is said to be easy to grow. It features large flame red flowers held upright over lush green foliage produced from bulbous roots.
