Free Fall depicts the five stages of individual emotional response to loss and failure: shock, fear, shame, anger and despair. The recession means that some people feel that they have failed in their careers, relationships, finances and hopes for the future. This garden highlights the natural emotional responses to these experiences, to increase awareness of mental health issues.

Free Fall features five water-filled Perspex cages designed to provide a physical representation of each emotion. The cages vary in height, with a subterranean level where anger and despair are experienced. They are located within a pool and linked by rill waterfalls. Planted aero/hydroponic cylinders are hung within each cage; the symbolism of the plant choices and sense of containment reinforce the five emotional stages.
