This garden was inspired by the effects of the tsunami that occurred on March 11 2011 in Japan.

The turbulent black water represents the massive tsunami itself. Everything was swept away in a moment before the water retreated back to the sea, leaving behind a great deal of sorrow, and changing people’s lives dramatically.

The use of stone represents people’s unwavering determination to survive, and the pine tree represents hope. The Japanese-designed karesansui with its new shoots symbolises the future. The English planting scheme demonstrates Japanese appreciation for the international aid received, and depicts the sense of unity as the world came together to offer support and help.
