20 – 21 March 2010; Preview evening: 19 March
Widely considered as one of the most stylish plant additions to any home, orchids come in a surprising range of shapes, sizes and colours, all of which can be found at the London Orchid Show in Westminster. Browse from hundreds of orchids on sale by specialist growers from home and abroad, and receive expert advice on all aspects of orchid care.
New for 2010 is the addition of the Botanical Art Show, where 25 artists, some of whom are travelling from as far as Japan, Australia and Taiwan will be exhibiting art depicting plants of all kinds in an attempt to win a coveted RHS Gold Medal.
There will also be chance for visitors to view a rarely seen exhibition of RHS commissioned works of award-winning orchids. The RHS Lindley Library has a collection of more than 7,000 drawings depicting award-winning orchids. It was begun in 1897, when Nellie Roberts, the RHS’s first orchid artist was commissioned, with the aim that every orchid awarded a prize at RHS shows should have its portrait painted.
Through Nellie’s work, and that of the current commissioned artist Deborah Lambkin, visitors to the show will be able to see the changing tastes of orchid lovers from the late Victorian era to the present day.
Additionally, the Library will be displaying over 20 gold medal winning works of contemporary art from its Collection, which will help the artists involved and the public understand what a gold medal winning picture looks like.
Further artistic displays will be demonstrated by the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS).
There will also be a series of talks and demonstrations on choosing and growing orchids on both days of the show.
