Almost every gardener aspires to one area of their space that is low maintenance. Urban Sanctuary presents several ideas to inspire visitors and enable them to enhance all or just part of their own garden in a modest style. It’s a tranquil marriage of beautiful organic curves and rich, well thought through materials and elegant design.
A stunning, wooden sleeper wall creates privacy and incorporates a glass panel that creatively reflects the light. The chamfered wood divide slowly blends down into a stylish, but substantial border edging, creating a dramatic and useful integral raised bed. The garden creatively uses recycled rubber mulch and chippings on the borders and the gravelled planting area, it’s so effective and realistic that you need to look closely to see it is not the 'real thing'.
This all adds to the low maintenance element that is reinforced by the selection of trees and shrubs that create structure. These are underplanted with nectar rich perennials for insects such as Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’, Pulmonaria ‘Samurai’, Pulmonaria saccharata ‘Leopard’, Thymus ‘Silver Posie’, Thymus vulgaris, Nepeta x faassenii, Bergenia ‘Sunningdale’ and ferns such as Polypodium vulgare and several species of Dryopteris to create soft spring planting.
The garden also features a tactile timber globe made by Jamie Broxton. It’s the perfect space for a couple downsizing from the family home to more modest accommodation and creates a dreamy, neat but comfortable space that is moderate in terms of its maintenance needs
