Ron Scamp's daffodils

Narcissus Gwawr. Image: Martin MulchinockRHS Show Cardiff wouldn’t be the same without a stunning display of spring daffodils. Ron Scamp never fails to deliver a divine exhibit of fabulous blooms in every shade and hue of yellow and gold at this amazing spring show. His stand was launching a new daffodil, Narcissus ‘Gwawr’ (pictured) which means ‘Dawn’ in Welsh.

“They are the harbingers of spring,” says Ron Scamp. “It’s a period when your heart is lifted especially with the wide range and diversity of the modern daffodils, though nothing is more delightful than wandering in the valleys and coming across the drifts of wild daffodils and their ethereal beauty. The modern daffodil is easy to grow, available in a beautiful range of colours and some of them have gorgeous scents too. Plus their natural flowering period can be from Christmas until May.”

Ron’s Growing Tips

  • Daffodils like an open and light aspect with a well-drained soil.
  • When they have finished flowering you can deadhead them, but it is not necessary. Keep their foliage growing as long as possible and let it die back naturally.
  • Feed the plants with a high potash feed in early spring when the roots are down. The food is then taken into the leaves, which generates energy back to the bulb as the foliage dies back.
  • Next year’s flowers are initiated in June and July, so if you cut the foliage off too early you can lose the energy needed for next years’ flowers.
