Heucheras from Plantagogo.com
One group of plants that features widely at this year’s RHS Show Cardiff is the Heuchera. The show gardens feature several purple-leaved varieties but at least two nurseries are exhibiting a fabulous range of these versatile plants.
Plantagogo.com holds the national collection of Heucheras and its stand featured some new varieties including a new and vibrant yellow-green Heuchera ‘Lime Marmalade’.
“Heucheras are very easy to grow and really don’t require much attention,” says collection holder Vicky Fox. “Simply trim the older leaves off after the winter, or if they are marked at the end of the summer they can be tidied up then too. Heucheras don’t like to be waterlogged and they don’t like to be too dry for too long either.”
Vicky’s growing tips
- Trim plants up in spring removing any old, marked leaves, but never cut into the crown.
- Feed plants with a balanced fertiliser, but don’t overdo it or they will bolt.
- Take careful note of each plant’s sun or shade requirements and stick to them.
- Established clumps can eventually rise up out of the ground, so dig them out and replant them deeper up to the crown but not deeper than the crown. They can also be divided in spring.
- Vine weevil can affect plants but this pest can be controlled using a nematode based treatment.
