Double delight as RHS Young Designer of the Year gets Best Show Garden

Hugo BuggYoung design talent is making headlines at the RHS Show Tatton Park.

Twenty-three-year-old Hugo Bugg, from Cornwall, has not only been named RHS Young Designer of the Year, but has stolen the thunder of his more experienced counterparts by taking the awards for Best Show Garden.

The Albert Dock GardenCreating his Albert Dock Garden was the final challenge for Hugo, who has been through a national selection process overseen by an RHS panel.

Bob Sweet, RHS Shows Organiser said: “Hugo’s achievement is phenomenal. To not only win an RHS Gold Medal, but on top of this to achieve the accolade of Best in Show, was something we never imagined our Young Designer to walk away with. Hugo is a truly worthy winner.”

A delighted Hugo said: “It’s brilliant. I couldn’t have succeeded without all the help I received from my friend James and Dhundi from Himalayan Landscaping, who threw themselves into bringing the garden to life as much as I did.

“Winning Best in Show on top is something I couldn’t have imagined in my wildest dreams, and I think it’s going to take a while for it to sink in."

Hugo will now work on the Laurent-Perrier garden at next year’s Chelsea Flower Show. “That will be a great experience,” he added.

Hugo pitted his talents against three finalists, who were each briefed to reflect an aspect of the north west of England. All achieved exceptionally high standards, with Olivia Stewart (25) and William Quarmby (27) both receiving RHS Silver Gilt Medals for their gardens.

What made Hugo's garden Best Show Garden

Hugo’s garden took on a challenging interpretation of Liverpool’s Albert Dock, exploring the juxtaposition of horticulture and architecture, playing homage to the Grade I listed building by using the same construction materials.

  • Bob Sweet said: “The judges considered the constructive detail of the garden, including the choice of materials, to be exceptional. Hugo has very cleverly delivered a garden that is both intimate, but also has a very useable space.
  • “The garden is perfectly enclosed by the horizontally-trained hornbeams and the use of silver birch. The choice of white flowering plants contrasts beautifully against the red brick colour.”
  • As the RHS Young Designer of the Year, Hugo’s next challenge will be to work alongside the team that will create Laurent-Perrier’s RHS Chelsea garden in 2011.

Hugo’s award-winning garden will be on display at the RHS Show Tatton Park until Sunday 25 July.
