The garden is inspired by the centenary of the Japanese garden at Tatton Park that was completed in 1911, following the visit by Alan de Tatton, 3rd Baron Egerton of Tatton, to the 1910 Anglo-Japanese exhibition in London. The design is in the style of the tea garden, though as seen through Western eyes.
The main focus from the “flying goose” bridge is the stone, standing in the water, which is designed to direct the mind’s eye onwards towards paradise - the resting place of spirits. Lanterns are used to illuminate key points, while stepping stones are placed at measured distances to ensure a relaxed pace if walking through the garden.
Plants featured include acers and mosses, similar to those used when Japanese gardens were fashionable in Edwardian England.
