All gardens will be judged to RHS criteria and are eligible for RHS Medals.

Show Gardens

As with all RHS shows the Show Gardens are a central feature at Tatton Park and a destination for visitors eager to be inspired by the creative design ideas and plantsmanship on show. They are a fantastic way to make a statement at the show promoting your organisation, brand, charity or garden design business. Gardens may be:

  • Traditional
  • Theatrical
  • Conceptual
  • Contemporary
  • Environmental

The quality and variety of plant material are as critical to a garden’s success as the integrity of the design, and the quality of construction and finish.

The minimum size is 64m2 and the maximum is 225m2 . The longest dimension on any side of a show garden is 15m (or the diameter on circular gardens.)

Small Gardens

7m x 5m

These smaller gardens provide an excellent opportunity for first time exhibitors and students who may not be in a position to stage a full-scale garden. They may take the form of either a complete garden or an element of a larger garden design.

As with Show Gardens, the quantity, quality and variety of plant material are important elements of the Small Gardens, together with the quality of design, construction and finish.

Themed Gardens

Minimum of 60m² and no more than 100m²

This category is the opportunity for designers to unleash their imaginations, showing inspiration and foresight through garden design. Each year a different design brief is set by the RHS; in 2013 we set the theme of Galaxy and in 2012, Orchestra was the theme. This category has proven to achieve incredibly creative and successful results.

Applications will be presented to an RHS Garden Selection Panel who will choose five entrants to build their designs at the 2014 show. Each successful entrant will receive an RHS grant towards the total budget of their garden. The theme for 2014 is yet to be confirmed.

RHS National Young Designer of the Year Gardens

Minimum of 60m² and no more than 100m²

Unique to Tatton Park, this garden category focuses on promoting careers in horticulture, giving applicants aged 28 years old and under the opportunity to make their show garden debut at an RHS show.

Applicants can be students or young people already working in the industry and three finalists will be selected to make their designs a reality at the 2014 show. A different theme/brief is set each year by the RHS and the three finalists will also be supported by an RHS grant of £12,000 towards the garden budget.

The gardens will be judged for RHS medals and one finalist will win the award of Best RHS National Young Designer of the Year Garden.
