Panels of selected RHS judges complete the judging of gardens, floral exhibits and other horticultural exhibits before the show opens.

All exhibits are judged using RHS criteria - they are not judged against each other. There is no limit to the number of medals the judges can award.

Four medal grades are available for award for horticultural exhibits at the Royal Horticultural Society's shows, and these are used by RHS Committees and judging panels who recommend awards for exhibits.

The awards are:
Gold
Silver-Gilt
Silver
Bronze

No awards are made to exhibits judged to be below Bronze standard.

These medals (with the exception of the Gold Medal, which is not further qualified) are available in the following ranges according to the type of exhibit:

Exhibits of Show Gardens, Back to Back Gardens, Flowers and Ornamental Plants are awarded in the FLORA medal range.

Exhibits of Fruit are awarded in the HOGG medal range.

Exhibits of Vegetables are awarded in the KNIGHTIAN medal range.

Exhibits of Special Scientific or Educational Interest are awarded in the LINDLEY medal range.

Exhibits of Pictures, Photographs, Window Boxes and Hanging Baskets, Flower beds, Floral Arrangements and Floristry are awarded in the GRENFELL medal range.

Awards are given for the following:

Best Back to Back Garden
Best Exhibit in the RHS Floral Marquees
Best Exhibit in the National Plant Societies Marquee
Best Exhibit in the Flora Design Studio
Best Display in the RHS/Ball Colegrave National Flower Bed Competition
Best Plant Plaza Unit
Award of Merit (for a show feature)

Certificates of commendation are given to gardening sundries exhibitors whose stands reach a high standard of presentation. These certificates are awarded for excellence of presentation and are not an RHS endorsement of the products or services on display.

Vital Statistics

The Show

  • Tatton reaches a milestone this year – 2008 will be its 10th anniversary!
  • Two brand new marquees will feature at the show – The Rural Crafts & Skills Marquee where visitors will be able to see demonstrations, and the British Floristry Association Marquee, where two live national floristry finals will take place
  • The show is hosted on 29 acres of showground, surrounded by the parkland of the Tatton Park estate in Knutsford, Cheshire.

The Sights, Scents and Sounds

  • There are around 12 individual designers or organisations that are involved in displaying a garden at the show for the first time.
  • 3 horticultural colleges and 5 schools and communities are involved in gardens or flower beds displays.
  • 20 local authorities will take part in the 10th RHS / Ball Colegrave National Flower Bed Competition, where they will compete to be crowned the best in bedding!
  • The show will feature around 50 gardens in the Show and Back to Back categories.
  • Hundreds of other exhibitors and trade stands will also feature, selling everything from garden accessories and plants to handmade crafts and botanical paintings.
  • Valuable garden and growing advice can be sought in the Gardening in Action Marquee, as well as at the RHS Gardening Advice Desk.

The Visitors

  • More than 12,000 glasses of Pimms, 47,000 cups of tea and 20,000 rounds of sandwiches and baguettes will be consumed throughout the show.
  • 48,000 tubs and cornets of ice cream will be enjoyed.
  • 2,000 portions of strawberries will be washed down by oodles of champagne.
