The Australian and New Zealand GardenThe Australian and New Zealand Garden

The Australian and New Zealand garden was completed in 2005. The area was designed around the mature eucalyptus trees that already existed and is used to provide a transitional garden between the arid, stony dry garden and the lusher, greener tone of the Queen Mother’s Garden. The garden has a contemporary feel, accentuated by a raised circular area with modern styled oak seating. To enhance a feeling of authenticity, a billabong has been created using the natural drainage of the site, and this area hosts a copse of Dicksonia antarctica and other ferns.

Other plants of note include several cultivars of phormium, a very important plant to the Maoris of New Zealand, the bizarre form of Pseudopanax crassulifolius and the beautiful sky blue flowers of Osthrosanthus polystachyus. The majority of the plants selected for this area are all hardy in this country with a few exceptions such as Anigozanthus manglesii, the Kangaroo Paw.
