Passiflora x violacea AGM
Violet passion flower
This hybrid is a cross between Passiflora caerulea and Passiflora racemosa.
It can climb up to 6m (20ft) high and is grown for its masses of rich violet purple flowers during the summer.
The foliage is evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on the winter temperature. It seldom sets fruit, but when it does they are very similar to these of P. caerulea.
It prefers sun or light shade and should be grown in a conservatory that is shaded from midday sun. It needs a moist but well-drained soil or compost. Plants should be fed regularly throughout summer with a high potash liquid feed or in spring with a controlled-release fertiliser.
It will withstand cold temperatures down to about -7°C (20°F) and is therefore hardy in the mildest areas of the UK.
