The Glasshouse News

Build & construction

Smiemans Projecten, a family-run Dutch company, and eminent Dutch architect Peter van der Toorn Vrijthoff developed the clever pre-fabricated glasshouse design to provide the perfect environment to house the dramatic display of beautiful plants all year round to ensure a sensory visitor experience.

Other award-winning designers that have worked alongside RHS staff include: international exhibition designer Neal Potter, who helped create the secret underground world of plants in the Root Zone; Tom Stuart Smith who created the outside garden; and Cleve West who designed the Teaching Garden.

The Glasshouse setting, from lake-reservoir to the interior landscape, was designed by Colvin and Moggridge together with the in-house RHS team for detailed planting. Around 40 other contractors have been involved from drainage consultants to manufacturers of artificial rock structures.
