Learning within the garden takes many forms including guided walks, demonstrations and an extensive programme of courses in gardening and related subjects.

Courses and workshops

Courses and workshops are run on a day, term or academic year basis - ideal for those wishing to either take up a new hobby, top-up on a preferred subject or obtain a qualification.

Courses are open to all, although members of the RHS are eligible for discounts on course fees.

The broad range of workshops and courses on offer includes:

Learn to Garden
These courses and workshops range from a practical introduction to gardening through to specialist workshops in subjects such as propagation, fruit pruning, container gardening and gardening for wildlife to longer courses to gain an RHS qualification.

Garden Design
A number of options are on offer to students who wish to study garden design at RHS Garden Harlow Carr from introductory day courses to courses with qualifications.

City and Guilds Garden Design is offered by Craven College at the gardens. Call 01756 791411.

 

Leeds Metropolitan University offers a suite of pre-degree courses in Garden Art and Design. For further information contact Jean Horne, Course Administrator, on 0113 812 3216.

Garden History
A day course looking at examples of the contribution of Yorkshire people and gardens to garden development and heritage.

Garden Crafts etc
Day and weekend courses in willow weaving, hedgelaying and drystone walling.

Arts and Crafts
Day and short courses in botanical painting (flower painting and drawing), flower and garden photography, flower arranging, wirework sculptures and embroidery.

Beekeeping
Weekend or evening classes at Harlow Carr run by the Harrogate and Ripon Beekeepers Association.

Masterclass demonstrations and walks

We run a number of demonstrations and walks throughout the year. These walks and demonstrations are led by experienced members of the gardens staff at Harlow Carr and offer the opportunity to learn more about gardening. They start at 2pm, last 1 – 11/2 hours, and will go ahead regardless of the weather, so please come prepared appropriately.

19 June 2008: Walk - The streamside garden
3 July 2008: Walk - Composting at Harlow Carr
14 August 2008: Walk - Kitchen garden
21 August 2008: Walk - Herbaceous perennials in the garden 

Ticket price:
£3 RHS members, £9 non-members  (inclusive of gardens entrance fee)

Library

The Library has all the latest books on practical gardening, garden design, botanical art, garden history, wildlife gardening, plant hunting, and much more. It also keeps a good selection of the major gardening magazines.
