Aucuba (spotted laurel) is recommended for its robustness and ability to grow in dry, shaded sites. Despite their reputation for toughness, Aucuba can become stressed when their roots become waterlogged during cold, wet winters.
This results in blackening of leaves leaving patches of dull moist blackened areas. There is no evidence that a pest or disease causes this and there is no need to apply pesticides.
Where possible improve the drainage around the plant. Add a top dressing of gravel and bulky organic matter such as composted bark or garden compost to improve the texture of heavy clay soils before planting. In wet districts planting on low mounds, about 20cm (8in) high can help.
Treat established plants by removing any affected foliage and shoots. Encourage strong re-growth by applying a balanced general fertiliser around the base of the plant in early spring. Mulching with bulky organic matter can also help.
