Medinilla magnifica is native to the rainforests of the Philippines where it can grow to 2.4m (8ft). In cultivation it is typically 90cm (3ft) high and wide.
Medinilla is not easy to grow without the warm and humid conditions of a tropical glasshouse, and often declines as a houseplant.
Try to provide conditions as close as possible to optimum: in winter, minimum night temperature should be no lower than 16°C (60°F), and 3–8°C (37-46°F) higher in the day. Warmer, humid conditions are needed in summer. Keep up humidity by misting and placing the plant on a tray filled with moist gravel.
Medinilla needs plenty of water from mid-February to late September, and monthly feeds of a liquid fertiliser. In winter provide just enough water to prevent wilting.
Good light is needed to induce flowering, but leaves can scorch if conditions are too bright. Prune plants straight after flowering. Repot in summer into John Innes No 2 compost. Softwood cuttings will root in a heated propagator at 20–25°C (68-77°F) .
