Streptocarpus problems

Search the RHS website

Streptocarpus 'Crystal Ice'Streptocarpus have shallow root systems and are best grown in wide shallow pots using a well-drained soil-less compost.

Keep in good light but not exposed to hot sun which can cause leaf scorch. An east or west-facing windowsill is best in summer; in winter move to a south-facing position.

To increase humidity in drier surroundings stand the pots on saucers of pebbles kept moist, but do not allow the water to reach the base of the pot.

Where leaves rot at the base the cause is overwatering or the base of the pot is sitting in water. Remove the rotting leaves and repot.

Where very large leaves develop it is due to poor light and/or excessive feeding.

The dieing back of the ends of leaves in autumn or winter is a natural condition as growth slows with shortening day length, cooler temperatures and reduced moisture uptake. Simply trim them off. If plants are kept growing vigorously, this may not occur.
