The RHS launched Britain in Bloom 2009, the UK’s biggest and longest-running community gardening campaign, with a fresh new face that puts community participation and environmental responsibility at the heart of the campaign, by increasing the importance of these two areas on the judging criteria.

BBC Breakfast News selected to film Manchester in Bloom to highlight the successful partnerships between Manchester’s “in Bloom” initiatives, the local RHS Neighbourhood Awards groups, the voluntary sector, the council, local schools and the probation service.

The national launch was held at the Interfaith Garden, Crawley, and was attended by TV gardeners Charlie Dimmock and Chris Collins, the Mayor of Crawley; regional and national Britain in Bloom judges, the Crawley Horticultural Society and a large number of local volunteers. They all joined together to get the garden ready for spring and to plant a symbolic dove (Davidia involucrata) tree.
