This pretty courtyard garden is complete with elements that work well in a small space, but would be equally at home inflated in size to fit a much larger plot.

There’s a paved seating area that uses slate from North Wales and butts up to soft, burnt earth, reclaimed bricks until a brick edging delineates the line between hard landscaping and soft border.

The back fence and trellis creates dappled shade that provides the perfect conditions for tree ferns and a Japanese maple. The garden features low-maintenance plants such as phormiums, which provide essential evergreen foliage that adds movement in the wind. There are box pyramids and cubes creating structure, solidity and drama. Two bay standards are planted into brick-built planters that punctuate the paving and blend with the reclaimed bricks. Raised bed or container? It’s a simple effect that could be recreated in small and large gardens alike.

A small lawn of fresh green grass is long and wayward: its spring and the first cut of the season awaits these vibrant grass blades. Troughs of pretty alpines add another talking point to this garden design, providing low level colour and interest and breaking up the paving.

It’s a garden where relaxation is an important element. Low maintenance frees up precious time to sit and enjoy the garden. Here a café table and chairs invite you to daydream and place yourself within the embrace of this small but perfectly formed space and dream of summer.
