Chelsea Flower Show 2005
24-28 May

Exhibitors

Great Pavilion

Many nurseries use Chelsea Flower Show as the opportunity to launch and showcase new species and cultivars of plants. The following plants are new and are being launched at Chelsea. The nursery's stand number is given in brackets.

Reishi mushroomsShitake mushroomsNewington Nurseries (E8)

Chef Raymond Blanc has joined forces with Stephen Hendry of Newington Nurseries to create this display of ‘exotic edibles’ primarily from Malaysia, with Indian and Chinese influence. The Asian Garden, presented by Malaysia Airlines, will feature unusual varieties including a bright red reishi mushroom.

Notcutts Nurseries (F7)

Euphorbia 'Blackbird'

Euphorbia 'Blackbird' was found by two of Notcutts employees on a routine check around the plant beds: it is a velvety deep purple sport of another Notcutts cultivar called 'Redwing'. The foliage is darkest in full sun and contrasts well with spring flowers. It is a very compact and bushy plant that will provide colour in the garden all year round. Yellowish 'flowers' cover the plant through to late spring. It's an ideal plant for use in a container, when a dramatic statement is required or would combine well with silver foliage. This plant recently won a prestigious Gold Medal at the Plantarium Exhibition in The Netherlands.
Grows to 45 x 50cm (18 x 20in). RRP £7.49. Available in spring.

Hydrangea Endless Summer Hydrangea Endless Summer TM ['Bailmer'], developed through over 10 years of research and testing in the United States, is a breakthrough in hydrangeas because of its ability to flower on new or the current season's growth. The result is a plant that provides beautiful flowers all summer long, rather than in just one flush, a marked improvement over normal macrophylla cultivars. The flowers are up to 20cm (8in) in diameter with pink blooms in alkaline soils and blue blooms in acidic soils. This plant is very forgiving of harsh treatment, be it natural or at the hand of the gardener ?] no matter whether the plant dies back to the crown (due to hard frost) or a gardener trims at the wrong time, it will still produce a wonderful display of flowers during that growing season.
RRP: £13.99. Available in June.

Helenium 'Chelsey'

Helenium 'Chelsey' produces dazzling red flowers flecked randomly with yellow that are borne in profusion from July to August on sturdy stalks. The flowers form a disc shape as the petals fan boldly outwards rather than drooping as they do in most Helenium cultivars, giving them a much perkier appearance. 50p from each plant sold will be donated to The British Red Cross Disaster Fund in memory of Terry Lloyd, the ITN reporter, who was killed on the road to Basra on 22 March 2003 while reporting on the war in Iraq.
Grows to 80cm (32in). RRP: £6.99. Available from mid-summer.
