A passion for nature, a shallow ravine in the Red Sea created by an earthquake 10 years ago and a rocky mountain ravine were the inspiration for the 4head Garden.
Highlighting the delicate balance and conflict that exists between man’s designs and the enduring power of nature, a wild Mediterranean hillside is the setting for this garden, in which nature is reclaiming an abandoned olive terrace and wild flowers are tumbling over a broken wall in colourful profusion.
A rock fall and natural cascade of water provides a backdrop to a sheltered haven where lush plantings of herbs and roses are framed by a wall that is clothed in vines, jasmine and bougainvilleas.
Planting is lush, with perfumed plants suited to the mild Mediterranean climate running wild across the sloping site. Roses, many of which owe their origin and breeding to this region, feature boldly in the plantings, along with a comprehensive selection of Mediterranean plants known to thrive in mild climate of the region.
A
garden for anyone and everyone, the 4head Garden is a place to relax or entertain.
With its central focus of a rock fall and water feature, the garden also serves
to remind us of the power of nature and the vital role played by water in
our lives and those of plants - a role which WaterAid is working hard to extend
and 4head are pleased to help promote the vital role of the charity through
its garden.
This year the 4head Garden will also be the setting for the debut of a new pink, ‘Mendlesham Sweetheart’. With a strong scent similar to vanilla, the new pink cultivar, which was bred by Sue and Peter Russell from Mendlesham, has double white flowers featuring deep red centres.
Winning her first gold medal in 1995, Marney Hall’s award-winning designs have been inspired by her passion for nature. The Independent on Sunday rated Marney as one of the top 10 gardeners in Britain in 2002 and today she is best known for her natural gardens with lush, wild plantings and always, water.
