This is an adaptation of an award-winning design, judged Best in Show at the 2004 Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show. Designed by Jack Merlo who, at 24, is the youngest show garden designer at Chelsea this year, its sleek, modern interpretation of the Australian landscape provides a contemporary and functional urban environment.

An ‘outdoor lounge’ feel is achieved by a dramatic deck that curves up to a wall at one end, with the backdrop hedge forming another wall and overhead patterned screens forming the ceiling. A lap pool merges seamlessly with a water feature, working with the black interior of the pool to produce an effect of an extended horizon, while shadows create an appearance of floating. The simplicity of the design and the integrated nature of all its features give the space a sense of enclosure and intimacy.

Fleming's Nurseries Float show gardenA lush textural feeling has been created in the garden by using contrasting foliage. The plants have been incorporated into the architectural composition of the area and have been chosen primarily for their texture and colour. The garden includes magnolia, bold foliaged plants, common hornbeam and perennials to soften geometric lines.

Jack believes that the Fleming’s Nurseries Float Garden is designed to be somewhere you can entertain, exercise, relax and reflect.
