The Merrill Lynch Garden is designed to be a workplace that is an extension of the home. This is very much a gardener’s garden but incorporates elements that stem from Andy Sturgeon’s interest in architecture. The work area is controlled, but as one moves away from the office, things become more tranquil, energised and inspired.
It has an office at one end with a glass front, which makes a seamless connection with the garden. Stone flooring runs out from the office and becomes a series of oak cube stepping stones leading onto the lawn. A dramatic water feature in the form of a chute running down from the roof of the building provides energy.
The calming influence of the water feature is best appreciated from the solid oak cubes ‘floating’ above and through the planting, which provide seating as well as being sculptural objects in their own right. The cubes ‘morph’ from seats to a flight of steps and then to a path as they lead through the plants and alongside a small pool.
The structural planting is mainly trees and shrubs, providing background colour to the garden, which ranges from bright green through to very dark green, incorporating a hint of grey. There is also a river of grasses punctuated by large dark purple Tulipa ‘Queen of Night’, Helleborus and Acanthus. This combination, along with the fresh green upright stems of teasel and burnt orange fox and cubs creates a truly unique blend of exotics and natives.
Andy’s inspiration partly comes from his own passion to have such a work and garden space.
