As part of the SeaBritain 2005 celebrations of our maritime heritage, this garden evokes a scene from a coastal setting. At the heart of the design is a tumbledown fisherman’s cottage, which nestles among native and traditional coastal planting.
An old wooden boat lying among drifts of planting, barrels, tools and ropes hints at a life at sea, and brings the garden together with the ocean nearby. Native species of plants have been carefully selected for their tolerance to a windy coastal environment.
At either side of the garden are protective natural stonewalls, forming an effective windbreak from the elements, which then lead down to aged timber breakwaters.
To the rear of the garden groups of Salix alba provide a windbreak with shimmering sound, colour and motion that evokes the ocean. A group of Sambucus nigra and specimen Prunus spinosa provide protective structure to the garden and help form an effective background to foreground planting.
Geoffrey Whiten has exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show for some 30 years, during which time he has won six RHS Gold Medals.
