Longacres Landscape, newcomers to Chelsea, has chosen to follow the way of the Japanese masters with its interpretation of Yin and Yang in a modern garden setting. The principles of Yin (the positive, active force) and Yang (the negative, passive force) and their mutual basic elements of wood, fire, earth, metal and water have all been included in the design.

Longacres Landscape Sunflower Street gardenEncapsulating the interlocking symbols for Yin and Yang and a simple restricted colour palette of black and silver planting, the garden is intended to reflect a balance of colour, texture and graphics. There is a fusion of modern and natural materials, including steel and slate. The planting scheme features plants that are cultivated regularly with rarer specimens to excite the compulsive collector.

Black and white form a dramatic, clear cut contrast of colour; however, black and silver create a softer association. The qualities of each colour, one luminous, the other rich and deep, blend together. Foliage plants of all shapes, sizes and textures are used for dramatic effect; large sculptured leaves contrast with feathery silver foliage, and densely woolly, silver leaves complement dark purple spikes.
