Dias Vagos (Lazy Days)

Designer: Jeffery Hewitt
Sponsor: Oldfield Partners LLP
Contractor: Hewitt Landscapes

This garden has been inspired by the relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. Dias Vagos reflects typical colour, materials, plants and meandering paths that would be found in the Mediterranean. The garden designer, Jeffery Hewitt, believes that due to the prospect of global warming and possible water shortages, this garden may be more typical of the UK in future years.

Hewitt Landscapes city gardenThe centrepiece to the garden is a canal of water flanked with pads of soft chamomile on either side. Shooting over this and into the pond are eight simple jets of water. There are gnarled olive trees underplanted with plush peonies and contrasting irises.

Further vistas to the left and right are punctuated with oil jars. The boundary walls to the left and right have a suggestion of a mural painted in the style of those found at Santorini. The side beds are filled with lavenders and Cupressus sempervirens. There is a wisteria at the back of the garden, which is mirrored by standard wisterias at the entrance. Visitors to this garden will gaze over silver Santolia hummocks, along the water to a bench at the end of the garden.
