The Rhus Garden extends the chic interior of an urban apartment, providing an outdoor room to relax and entertain, above the bustling streets.
Classic materials of oak and limestone complement opulent red fibreglass planters from Bright Green, and ornate stainless steel wall panels by To Grace. The outdoor art echoes plant forms in the garden, creating sympathetic focal points that reflect the owner's interest in art and interior design. By night artworks transform into atmospheric light features, visible from inside the apartment.
The clean spatial layout is reflected in the planting, which is largely blocked and structural. Many of the plants are evergreen with flashes of sumptuous reds to unify with the planters. A mature multi-stemmed Rhus typhina will carry the colour theme into autumn. The four raised beds support oak benches that provide ample seating. A nestle of freestanding oak tables from The Oak House can be positioned to suit. Innovative oak fencing woven from Quercus Fencing, creates a sustainable and stylish boundary.
This is the garden designer’s, Freya Lawson, third successive exhibit at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. At the 2006 show Freya won a Silver-Gilt Medal for the NS&I Garden.
